Work bonuses for city law firms associates and lawyers who work in companies legal departments soared by 32 per cent in 2011, new figures have revealed.
Data complied by recruitment firm Laurence Simons shows that lawyers took home an average of £35,000 in bonuses last year, £8,500 more than in 2010. They also saw their average basic salary rise by 4 per cent to £111,500.
Lucinda Moule, MD of Laurence Simons, said: "A tough 2010 means employers have focused primarily on boosting salaries rather than increasing headcount."
While bonuses rose over the 12 months, the number of solicitors receiving them fell from 73 per cent in 2010 to 65 per cent last year, according to the data.
Deloitte partner Jeremy Black said: "Whereas in the past bonuses might have been consistent across different practice areas and firms, firms are now being much more selective in whom they pay bonuses to and the amounts."
