Co-op Gears Up For Launch Of Family Law Service

Thu, 03 Nov 2011

The Co-operative Group has pressed ahead with plans to launch a family law division by recruiting three lawyers from London-based firm TV Edwards.

Managing partner Jenny Beck, partner Christina Blacklaws and head of business development and strategy Chris May have been hired to lead the new division of Co-operative Legal Services (CLS). The trio will be responsible for developing the family law service for CLS, providing it is granted a licence by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).

The launch of the new service has been made possible by the reforms brought in by the Legal Services Act (LSA) this month, which have deregulated the legal sector.

Martyn Wates, deputy group chief executive of The Co-operative Group, said: "The Legal Services Act will change the way in which legal services are delivered in England and Wales."

"We believe that the presence of The Co-operative’s trusted brand and values in the market place, together with a combination of first class products and services, will provide customers with greater accessibility to legal advice and better value for money."

Eddie Ryan, managing director of Co-operative Legal Services, commented: "We are working extremely hard with the SRA in preparation for the introduction of ABSs and we look forward to being able to provide a full range of legal services to our members and customers."

CLS is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Co-operative Group which was set up in 2006. The company’s 400-plus staff already offer over-the-phone legal advice on personal injury claims, will writing, probate and estate administration, as well as conveyancing and employment law.
