Woman Wins Payout For Sex Discrimination In Workplace

Tue, 13 Dec 2011

A woman has been awarded compensation on the grounds of sex discrimination and constructive dismissal following an employment tribunal.

Angela Ashby worked in the sales department of Cathelco - a global marine supplies company based in Chesterfield - but left her role there due to a "laddish culture" which existed among her male colleagues.

During a sex discrimination tribunal in Sheffield, the 41-year-old revealed that manager Peter Smith would encourage an uncomfortable atmosphere in the workplace by allowing male employees to watch pornography at their desks and make lewd comments towards co-workers.

Ms Ashby also said she had been subject to cruel jokes about her weight and been referred to as "fat face" in a professional email, and stressed that other women working for the firm were also treated in a similar way.

Furthermore, she added that this bullying from her work colleagues forced her onto anti-depressant medication to cope with the distress.

After hearing the case, Judge Robert Little ruled in Ms Ashby’s favour and awarded her a compensation payout .
