Award-winning law firm Russell Jones and Walker has expanded the family law team in its Manchester office with a new Sharia law division.
In response to client demand, the RJW Islamic Legal Services division has been set up to work on arranging Islamic divorces in tandem with UK law divorces. It will specialise in achieving payments of the wife's 'Mahr', or mandatory Islamic financial settlements and the recovery of assets, even if a marriage is not recognised by UK courts.
In addition to handling divorce proceedings, the team will draw up tailored Islamic marriage contracts, mortgages, insurance and wills, and will also arrange mediation and arbitration in accordance with Islamic principles.
Leading the team is new recruit Aina Khan, who has more than 15 years' experience working with Sharia Councils, arbitration tribunals and other Muslim and Asian organisations, during which time she has gained expertise in Islamic family law solutions that are compatible with UK legislation.
"It's a pleasure to be part of a team that recognises the importance of offering this specialist service to Muslim and Asian communities," she said.
Amanda McAlister, head of family law at RJW's Manchester office, commented: "Aina is a renowned expert on Sharia family law and RJW is very excited about this new expansion of our already comprehensive family law offering."
After qualifying in 1991, Aina ran her own practice before becoming the head of family law at Woodroffes Solicitors in London.
