Two solicitors have been struck off for professional misconduct after it was ruled that the pair were totally incapable of properly running a practice. John Atuahene and Richard Thorburn had both owned their own law firms before merging into the Practical Law Partnership in 2004. A number of complaints were made about the legal firm by clients leading up to the tribunal, which heard more than 20 cases from a period of nearly four years.
The Scottish Solicitors Discipline Tribunal found both lawyers guilty of several counts of misconduct, labelling the pair hopelessly incompetent and ruling that neither was a fit and proper person to be a solicitor . Particular concerns were voiced at the bookkeeping of the pair, and although 53 year old Mr Atuahene was adjudged to be hopelessly incompetent, the tribunal did not believe him to be dishonest or manipulative.
Though twenty cases were heard at the hearing, the number of complaints made about the company is believed to be far higher, with many clients unhappy at the level of service they received and some reportedly unhappy about the legal costs they faced.
