SRA Shuts Down Solicitors Firm

Thu, 11 Mar 2010

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has closed a firm of solicitors which worked for a major claims management company. The Manchester office of Consumer Credit Litigation Solicitors (CCLS) has been shut down by the SRA over ‘suspected dishonesty’. The claims firm it worked for, Cartel Client Review, is the subject of a separate Ministry of Justice investigation. There have been a growing number of complaints about Cartel, who specialise in challenging the enforceability of debts, and in reclaiming payment protection insurance .

Another law firm, Gordons of Bradford, has been appointed to take over the files, following concerns that CCLS wasn’t acting in the best interest of its clients. Most of the legal firms 100 staff walked out in mid-February over unpaid wages, though it is not known how many of these were lawyers and how many were administrative staff.

With many of the tens of thousands of cases discovered to have been neglected, CCLS clients are being advised to contact Cartel to arrange alternative legal advice, or to find another solicitor to advise them. All affected customers will receive letters from the SRA asking what course of action they would like to take.
