Fraudulent Solicitor Struck Off

Tue, 16 Mar 2010

A Belfast lawyer has been struck off after he was found guilty of fraud . Philip Krown from Groomsport, County Down, unlawfully acquired £445,000 through mortgage fraud, and used the money to go on an extravagant spending spree. The solicitor, who is also known as William Philip Crossey, received a four year suspended jail sentence in November 2009, prompted the Law Society of Northern Ireland to refer the case to the Disciplinary Tribunal, which ordered that Krown may no longer practise as a solicitor .

Krown had put together a successful law firm in east Belfast, and despite making good money in his solicitors role, earning profitable legal costs, he stole the extra hundreds of thousands of pounds, which he used to rent an apartment in Kensington, buy expensive jewellery, travel across the world and develop an expensive account at The Ritz Hotel in London.

The media has given considerable attention to cases of dishonest solicitors recently. The recent arrests of two lawyers as part of an investigation into legal aid earned particular attention, owing to the misuse of public money.
