Sheffield Youngsters Offered Solicitors Legal Help

Tue, 22 Jun 2010

The Children’s Society has teamed up with Sheffield based solicitors to offer children in the steel city their own legal advice . The Lawyers for Young People partnership has the support of lawyers and solicitors willing to offer legal advice to all people, though the service is aimed primarily at vulnerable youngsters. Those youngsters in mind include the homeless, those in care or asylum seekers who may otherwise find their access to legal advice restricted.

As well as solicitors, volunteers will assist The Children’s Society in operating an internet and phone service, but the majority of work will be done by Sheffield based law firms such as Irwin Mitchell and Howells who will be sent cases and who will act on behalf of any clients.

Principal solicitor at The Children’s Society, Liz Fisher-Frank, revealed that Sheffield had been chosen as the location for the project owing to the enthusiasm shown by the local community and local legal firms towards the service. Fisher-Frank said she hoped the service would help to improve young people’s access to justice in the area. The service can be contacted either by freephone on 0800 092 0953, or via email at lfyp@childsoc.org.uk.
