DWS Law Firm Unveils Latest Transatlantic Legal Merger

Tue, 01 Jun 2010

Denton Wilde Sapte (DWS) has become the latest British-based law firm to announce a merger with an American counterpart. Ranked as the 21st largest legal firm in the City, DWS is set to merge with Chicago based Sonnenschein Nath and Rosenthal in a move that will create a global firm with 1,400 lawyers and revenues approaching £500 million. Sonnenschein is said to be the 59th biggest law firm in the US, and previously failed in its attempts to set up a London practice.

DWS is best known for its energy and restructuring practices, and has enjoyed an increasingly visible presence in the Middle East. Subject to the approval of the partners of the two firms on June 9th, the new firm will be known as SNR Denton, and will begin operating in September. DWS has found it tough to sustain its performance in the wake of the credit crunch, with partners profits falling by 39 per cent prior to an improvement last week.

SNR Denton will become the latest product of a transatlantic merger. Last month saw one of the UK’s biggest solicitors firms Lovells merge with Washington based Hogan and Hartson to create the ninth biggest law firm in the world, with revenues of nearly £1.4 billion.
