Solicitors Enjoy Increase in Employment Law Enquiries

Tue, 24 Aug 2010

While the recession has made life more difficult for many law firms, employment lawyers have enjoyed a rise in the number of enquiries. Despite official figures showing a fall in unemployment, solicitors are reporting an increase in the number of enquiries they are receiving, both from people who have been made redundant and are considering a case of unfair dismissal, and from employees who are facing redundancy .

UK-based Contact Law, a firm which refers legal enquiries to the relevant solicitors and legal firms, has reported a 15 per cent increase in the number of people seeking employment related legal advice in July, in addition to a 1 per cent increase in June, and a 3 per cent increase in May. Four out of every 10 enquiries in July were from people who had already lost their jobs, while 20 per cent of the enquiries were from people about to be made redundant .

Director at Contact Law, Dan Watkins, said that the increasing tendency for employees and former employees to seek legal advice could be problematic for companies, who may be hindered in their efforts to make cutbacks in order to survive the recession.
