Solicitors Await Third Trans-Atlantic Merger of 2010

Thu, 26 Aug 2010

Talks over yet another trans-Atlantic merger are underway between two law firms as American firm Saunders and Dempsey looks to enhance its credentials as a global outfit. The law firm is in talks with the British legal firm Hammonds over a merger which would create a company with 1,300 lawyers, 37 countries across 17 countries and an annual estimated revenue of £405 million.

With both firms currently undergoing due diligence, partners at both solicitors firms have been informed of the intention to merge, with a partnership vote expected by the end of 2010. Should the vote give approval to the merger, it would become the third significant trans-Atlantic merger of 2010, after Denton Wilde Sapte joined forced with Sonnenschein Nath and Rosenthal, while Lovells merged with Hogan and Hartson.

Saunders and Dempsey chairman James Maiwurm said the merger would give the firm a much needed presence in the UK and Western Europe, while managing partner at Hammonds also lauded the proposed merger, saying it would help Hammonds to meet its long term growth strategy.
