New immigration controls are making it harder for lawyer hopefuls from outside the European Union to secure internships at UK law firms. In an effort to control immigration, the government has reduced the number of work permits available to companies in the UK for prospective employees from outside the EU.
The development has considerable implications for the UK legal industry, as many legal firms have established links with universities in Asia. Norton Rose, for example, has set up links with Indian universities, but is being forced to reject would-be Indian solicitors owing to the new work permit restrictions. It is not only prospective interns who have fallen foul of the new regulations, Norton Rose also failed to obtain a visa for one of its trainee lawyers.
Norton Rose is thus unlikely to be the only law firm which voices its discontent with the new regulations, with senior figures at the legal firm expressing concerns that British companies may no longer be able to rely on the input of some of the brightest prospects from around the world.
