A solicitor is suing his own legal firm owing to an expensive divorce settlement with his ex-wife. In an unusual case, Andrew Grove is suing Andrew Grove and Co. for negligence and damages amounting to £300,000. As the name suggests, Mr Grove is a partner at the legal firm, but it still taking the firm to the High Court, as well as suing his barrister, Bernard Limbrey of Three Dr Johnsons Buildings. Mr Limbrey will be represented by Browne Jacobsen associate Jim Hobsley, while Andrew Grove and Co. will be represented by sole practitioner Graham Goodwill.
The case centres around an expert witnesss valuation of Mr Groves firm. It was estimated that the company was worth £347,500 a figure which prompted the judge to order Mr Grove to transfer all of the equity in his £370,000 home to his wife as part of the divorce settlement, while also paying £12,000 a year towards the maintenance of his children. In light of the settlement, Mr Grove was furious at the valuation of his firm, which he instead values at just £12,000. Though solicitors and lawyers are aware of negligence cases, few family lawyers will have seen a case such as this.
