Scottish Solicitors Warns of Tesco Law Dangers

Wed, 07 Apr 2010

One of Scotland’s leading lawyers has hit out at the proposed introduction of the new so-called Tesco law . Mike Dailly, principal solicitor of the Govan Law Centre, claims the new laws would endanger consumer protection, and could see new risks and illegitimate interests exploited. Mr Dailly’s words follow a similar warning from a senior partner at Thompsons law firm last week.

Frank Maguire warned that the new legislation would not only allow banks and supermarkets to offer a full range of legal services, but could see drug barons exploit the regulations and increase the possibility of money laundering . Mr Dailly also warned that businesses and investors were far more high risk than legal firms .

The Bill, which permits non-lawyers to offer legal services, is currently going through Parliament and has been defended by government ministers. Community Safety Minister Fergus Ewing hit back at the claims, insisting there were safeguards in place.

The issue is set to be debated at a special general meeting of the Law Society of Scotland on April 16th. The discussion is set to be a heated one, as the issue has divided Scotland’s 10,000 solicitors, with barristers also split over the issue.
