Solicitor Cleared as Another Investigation Begins

Tue, 06 Oct 2009

The Law Society has suspended a County Londonderry solicitor while they investigate his work. John Hickey from Coleraine has been suspended from practising law since 9th September, though the Law Society will not comment further until the investigation is concluded. While Mr Hickey is suspended, another law firm has been temporarily appointed to take control of Mr Hickey’s legal practice .

The news follows the decision from the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal that 53 year old lawyer Yvonne Hossack was not guilty of breaching rules of professional conduct. Miss Hossack has campaigned against care home closures and had been criticised by Hull, Northamptonshire and Staffordshire Councils, prompting the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority (SRA) to bring a case against her. Among the allegations faced by Miss Hossack were claims that she provided confidential information to a third party, and that she had accepted instructions from third parties.

None of the six allegations were proven, and Miss Hossack pointed to the fact that no one has had a complaint upheld against her during her 30 year career in which time she has advised 30,000, while Hull MP and Home Secretary Alan Johnson gave evidence on her behalf.
