A City law firm is being sued for up to £5 million over claims they worked with a global oil company to ruin a barristers career. Hong Kong based barrister Michael Ford claims he has been unable to work as a barrister for 16 years, and is accusing four lawyers of a breach of contract and negligence after they allegedly conspired with Exxon Mobil. The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is investigating the charges. Among the accused is leading lawyer Michael Napier, a former president of the Law Society and senior partner at Britain’s largest personal injury law firm. Mr Napier has also acted as a special enjoy to the attorney general .

Mr Ford acted on behalf of Exxon Mobil’s Hong Kong subsidiaries in 1992 at an inquest into the deaths of two workers. Mr Ford claims he found edited scientific documents which an Exxon Mobil lawyer warned him not to make public. After reporting the threat to the police, Ford was allegedly told by the police to leave the country and not to return, while Mr Ford claims Exxon Mobil attempted to have his Hong Kong certificate to practice suspended and served him with a breach of confidentiality lawsuit .
