Solicitors across the country will this month be offering to draw up basic wills for free, providing that clients make charitable donations . This November is Will Aid month, in which law firms across the UK have agreed that a solicitor will not charge legal fees, but will suggest a donation of £75 for a single will and £110 for a pair or matching or mirror wills. Amendments can be made to existing wills for a suggested donation of £40. The suggested donations would cost less than half a client would usually be expected to pay in legal costs .
The wills can subsequently be registered for free with the Certainty National Will Register a service which would usually cost £28.75. A record will be kept listing which solicitors office holds the will should the client ever lose it. Experts are warning people to ensure a friend or relative is listed as the executor, as their loved ones could face huge charges when trying to secure the estate following their death if one of them is not assigned as an executor.
Among the participating charities as ActionAid, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, Help the Aged and Save the Children . A full list of participating lawyers and solicitors can be found at Willaid.org.uk.
