New research has found that this is likely to be the busiest time of the year for divorce lawyers . A combination of the festive period and the credit crunch is putting additional strain on troubled marriages. A new survey has claimed that one in four people admit that their relationship is under strain due to financial problems, whilst a further eleven per cent say they are only staying in their relationship as they are forced to by the current financial crisis with family law solicitors legal costs so high.
The research found that nearly 2 million British couples were experiencing marital difficulties, whilst 1.3 million people are considering splitting up. The credit crunch is by no means helping the situation, with 17 per cent of divorced men citing financial problems as a major factor in the failure of their marriage.
TakeLegalAdvice.com, a website which matches consumers with lawyers, reported an 30 per cent increase in enquiries over Christmas compared with last year. Derek Bedlow, the sites managing director, said, Christmas can be a nightmare for couples who are already experiencing marital problems . Many think about divorce but the added pressures brought about by the downturn may be the straw that breaks the camels back.
