Solicitor Struck Off After Misleading Clients Over Wills

Tue, 01 Dec 2009

A Worcestershire solicitor has been struck off after he misled clients and charged them over £2,000 to write basic wills . 58 year old Stephen Share has been banned from practising law for life after he was found guilty of misleading clients, failing to act in their best interests and of breaching accountancy rules. Mr Share was also ordered to pay £24,000 in legal costs following his appearance before a Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal.

Mr Share set up Solicitors Probate Services just over two years ago, and the company had become one of the largest probate firms in the country within months with 10,000 wills on its books. However, an investigation by local newspaper Sunday Mercury revealed how the legal firm was charging over £2,000 for simple wills that should cost around £100. Shockingly, Mr Share even continued to offer the expensive service after a High Court ban was issued.

The company used sales agents in supermarket foyers to attract new customers, who were asked to pay just £39 initially to have their wills drawn up. However, they were often persuaded to make a £2,100 up front payment on follow up visits to their home.
