A top Birmingham-based lawyer has been awarded a major role with West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

Jayne Salt has left her role as head of the Criminal Justice Unit at CPS Birmingham to replace David Clark as the new head of a complex casework unit, which covers four police regions.

During her 20-year career, the mum-of-two as prosecuted hundreds of defendants in road traffic fatality and injury cases, including millionaire’s son Antonio Boparan Singh who received 21 months in jail for dangerous driving .

The 19-year-old was driving at 70 mph in a 30 mph zone when he collided into a car carrying 11 month-old Cerys Edwards. The baby girl survived the accident but was left brain-damaged.

Commenting on her new role, Mrs Salt said organised crime remained a growth industry, making it a high priority for her unit.

Her 12-member team consists of six specialist lawyers working on up to 170 high-profile cases including murder, fraud and people and drug trafficking .

She said: "There are now thought to be more than 2,800 organised criminal gangs operating in England and Wales . There are three national hotspots – with Birmingham one of them."

"I’ve noticed how often there’s a link between cases and different operations. That’s one of the complicating aspects – I’d estimate that about ten per cent are interlinked."

"There are gangs in Birmingham and the West Midlands involved in drug trafficking, shootings, money laundering. There’s a big network of these people."
