A solicitor and a legal clerk accused of trying to steal a house have been cleared of any offence. Naresh Chopra, a lawyer from Chigwell, and Manjeet Chagger, from Hornchurch, were alleged to have worked with fraudsters in the sham sale of a rundown property . The pair were said to have used their knowledge of property law to create false documents to persuade the Land Registry that they were the legitimate vendors.
However, following a nine week trial, the duo have been found not guilty of conspiracy to defraud any of Liqat Ali, Her Majestys Land Registry, Hand Finance Ltd and any potential purchaser. They were also cleared of allegations of money laundering from the sale of the property after the jury were unable to reach a verdict on the charge. Former Special Constable Shahid Siddiqui was also cleared of conspiracy after the jury failed to reach a verdict.
Although Liaquat Romeo was found not guilty of conspiracy after the jury once again failed to reach a verdict, he was jailed for 18 months after being found guilty of converting criminal property after receiving £86,000 from the sale of the house .
