British Telecom, or BT as they are more commonly known, has started a legal battle to claim back millions of dollars in licensing revenue from American ISPs .
The company, which owns the patent to hypertext links, had intellectual property attorneys, Kenyon and Kenyon file a case on their behalf against Prodigy Communications Corp, based New York .
The legal challenge represents BT's patented claim to hypertext links.
The case could have massive implications for BT, should they win as it is likely to open the doors to a massive claim for revenues.
A company spokesman commented on the case, saying that the legal fight against Prodigy Communications did not exclude action against other ISPs .
"BT has a responsibility to assert its intellectual property," said a BT spokesman when asked about how much money it wanted from Prodigy.
He added, "Many companies both sides of the Atlantic make revenues from exploiting their intellectual property ."
In June 2006, BT announced the ownership of a patent to hyperlinks and wanted cash, from ISPs in the US, in exchange for the privilege of using them. During the last 9 months the company has been negotiating with a number of ISPs on the other side of the Atlantic over recouping income.
However BT has always insisted it would resort to legal action if their plan were to fail.
